Hysteresis and micromagnetics: a variational approach

The course provides an introduction to the theory of micromagnetics, comparing different viewpoints, coming from Physics and Engineering, from Mathematics (as a PDE-problem, and as a variational problem), from Computational Science.
Main topics:

  • Micromagnetics and Hysteresis: the physics of the problem and the mathematical models.
  • Some mathematical tools, and applications to the study of polycrystallin magnetic materials: Gamma-convergence and stochastic homogenization.
  • Numerical methods for micromagnetic simulations.

Evaluation Measurement and mitigation of low frequency electromagnetic fields

Environmental electromagnetic field in the frequency range up to 100 kHz can be generated by a wide variety of sources with different characteristics. The aim of the course is to provide a useful knowledge for the correct evaluation and measurement of the electric and magnetic fields. Particular attention will be devoted to design of mitigation systems through the use of dedicated numerical codes, which will be illustrated and experienced during the course.

Magnetism, magnetic materials and measurements

The aim of the course is to give an introduction to the basic concepts to understand

  • magnetism in magnetic materials and in particular ferromagnetism
  • the magnetization process in ferromagnetic materials for technological applications (soft magnetic materials with high permeability, hard magnetic materials with high coercivity, others, like magnetic recording media)
  • the experimental techniques to measure the magnetic properties.
