INRIM is the Italian National Metrological Institute (NMI) for all SI units except for the ionising radiation field, under the responsibility of ENEA's Istituto Nazionale di Metrologia delle Radiazioni Ionizzanti (INMRI).

Specifically, INRIM carries out and promotes scientific research, often in collaboration with various international partners, aimed at:

INRIM main premises, in an area of about 16 hectares south of Turin, are made up of 18 buildings with 37 000 m2 and with 40 main laboratories. Two additional INRIM units are hosted by Politecnico of Torino and by University of Pavia.
